CULTURAL EMPOWERMENT

Creating a sense of home and committing to self-determination in an ever-shifting landscape is paramount to NBT’s approach to placemaking. NBT uses its ownership as an economic lever for small to midsize BIPOC arts organizations, artists, community organizations, and businesses, through space subsidies, rentals, incubation programs, and event management support.

HARLEM

For more than fifty years, National Black Theatre’s physical space has been a fixture on Harlem’s main commercial corridor. After founding the institution in 1968, Dr. Barbara Ann Teer commissioned Haitian American architect Gerard Paul to execute the building’s design, and in 1983 secured a permanent home for NBT when she purchased the property.
